William Blake Is Doomed
Whate'er is born of mortal birth Must be consumed with the earth To rise from generation free Then what have I to do with thee? The sexes sprung from shame and pride Blowed in the morn, in evening died But mercy changed death into sleep The sexes rose to work and weep Thou, mother of my mortal part With cruelty didst mould my heart And with false self-deceiving tears Didst bind my nostrils, eyes, and ears Didst close my tongue in senseless clay And me to mortal life betray The death of Jesus set me free Then what have I to do with thee?

I wander thro’ each charter’d street Near where the charter’d Thames does flow And mark in every face I meet Marks of weakness, marks of woe In every cry of every Man In every Infants cry of fear In every voice: in every ban The mind-forg’d manacles I hear How the Chimney-sweepers cry Every blackning Church appalls And the hapless Soldiers sigh Runs in blood down Palace walls But most thro’ midnight streets I hear How the youthful Harlots curse Blasts the new-born Infants tear And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse

Youth of delight come hither And see the opening morn Image of truth new born Doubt is fled & clouds of reason Dark disputes & artful teazing Folly is an endless maze Tangled roots perplex her ways How many have fallen there! They stumble all night over bones of the dead And feel they know not what but care And wish to lead others when they should be led
